A semipermeable cell membrane may be permeable to water but impermeable
to another molecule like sugar. This action may be imagined as being
analogous to a chain link fence which would allow certain particles to
pass through it, but would be impermeable to particles which don't have
the proper size or shape to pass through the openings formed by the wire.
